5 Good Occasions to Hire an Amateur Photographer

There are certain events which don't come around very often, and really deserve to be captured through the lens of a proven professional photographer. A wedding is one of these events. A fashion show photo shoot might be another. But then there are many other occasions where the high cost of a professional just isn't affordable, and you may think that you'll just have to settle for using your own digital camera. Well, with Snapm's new booking feature, there's an easy to use compromise: hire a local amateur at an affordable price.

Here are some situations where you may have never thought about hiring a photographer, but now that it's easy to find an affordable but capable amateur, you'll be glad that you didn't take the photos yourself.

Night Out On The Town
Next time you and your friends are heading out on the city for a big night, chip in $5 each and have a photographer show up to the party and take some photos for an hour or two. You'll get more than the usual bro's-with-their-arms-around-each-other shots, and your latest facebook album will draw a lot of attention for actually containg great photos for a change. Estimated Price - $40-$80

Dating Site Profile Picture
Taking a leap of faith and decided to try and meet someone the "modern way?" Well here's some news for you: nothing impacts the amount of interest you get through a dating web site than your profile picture. Don't believe me? Read a really great analysis on the subject from the OKCupid Blog. You do not want to mess this one up. Hire an amateur photographer to come by for an hour and take a series of great profile photos for you, and later you can choose the one you like the best. Estimated Price - $20-$70

Small Business Photos
So you've decided to start your own business? Congratulations. Why not bring in a photographer one afternoon to capture the early days, take photos of your store/office/product, and take good looking pictures of your employees? It will boost employee morale and give you great material to post on your new company web site, blog, newsletter, or send to the press. Since new businesses are almost always cash strapped a professional photographer might not be in the budget, but an amateur definitely should be. Estimated Price - $50-$150

Selling Your House
When people come to look at your house they generally pick up an information sheet so that they have all the pertinent details when they leave. Many of these info sheets contain a photo of the house, and since this is likely the only way they'll be able to remember and distinguish your house later, you probably want that photo to look really great. Instead of wandering outside with your old Polaroid camera, consider hiring an amateur photographer to come by and make sure the photos end up looking great. Anything to increase the chances of an offer, right? Estimated Price - $50-$100

Child's Sports Game
Here's one that all the parents in town will be thanking you for. Hire a local amateur to show up to the little league or rec soccer game and take incredible photos of the team in action. Share the photos with the other parents on the team after the event, and everyone will have high quality shots of their kids that look far better than the usual spectator captured photos. Estimated Price - $40-$100

These are just a few of the options that may have never occurred to you. If you have any other creative ideas, feel free to mention them in the comments. In the meantime, head to Snapm to find a photographer near you.

How To Create a Real Time Photo Slideshow At Your Wedding

Today's tip comes from friend of Snapm, Ben Dodson, who wanted to contribute a little extra something to his friend's wedding day. What Ben did, with relatively little work, was set up a live slide show of pictures taken by the guests of the wedding playing on a screen at the wedding itself. In Real Time.

The secret to making this happen is the use of a great new piece of technology called the Eye-Fi card. What Eye-Fi has done is create SD cards with wifi built in. When you buy the card, you set it up to share your photos instantly with your computer and any service you choose (Picasa, Flickr, etc). In order to utilize this at an event like a wedding, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Gather 4+ digital cameras from family members and volunteers. You may want to slap a big orange sticker on them to indicate that they are the public cameras and should be used freely by guests of the event.
  2. Buy an Eye-Fi card for each camera.  Prices start at $49.99.
  3. Configure the cards to send their photos to the same folder on the same computer.
  4. Hook this computer up to a projector at the venue and have it continuously running a slideshow of images from the shared folder.
You'll want to make sure your venue either has wireless or you can set up a wireless network yourself from your laptop if you're technically savvy.

That's about it. If you have any success stories be sure to let us and the Eye-Fi folks know.
